Boat trailers rust over time. It’s completely normal and there is nothing generally dangerous about surface rust.

Cancerous rust is another matter – this is the rust that has eaten holes right through the metal. Boat trailers with cancerous rust are not only unsafe – but also illegal to be on the road.

So what can be done?

If your cross members have rusted out we can replace them and lengthen the lifespan of your boat trailer. After assessing your trailer and lifting the boat off, we cut out the old cross member and fabricate a new cross member. We weld it into place, refit any accessories or boat supports and refit your boat to the trailer.

We stock a range of pre-made cross members which are hot dipped galvanised. If we need to custom fabricate a cross member it is made from dura-gal steel. All weld seams are treated with cold galvanising spray.

Our experienced and licensed fabricators (welders) do these cross member replacements very regularly so you know it will be done correctly and with strong welds.

The cross members must be welded into place so unless you are a licensed welder, it’s not a DIY task.

No. We use the hoists in our workshop to lift most boats off their trailers while we replace the cross member. If your boat is too big for our hoists we utilise a local dry dock storage facility to lift your boat and store it while we do the repair and then lower the boat back onto your trailer.
