After months in storage, your caravan needs a thorough check before hitting the road. From tyre pressure to electrical systems, here’s your complete checklist to get you and your family safely back on the road.
1. Check Your Tyres
Tyres can lose pressure and develop flat spots during storage. Check tyre pressures against the manufacturer’s specifications and inspect sidewalls for cracking. Don’t forget the spare! If tyres are more than five years old, consider replacing them regardless of tread depth.
2. Inspect the Roof & Seals
Water damage is the number one enemy of caravans. Walk around the exterior checking every seal — around windows, doors, roof hatches, and joins. Look for cracks, shrinkage, or gaps. Reseal any suspect areas immediately to prevent costly water ingress damage.
3. Test All Electrical Systems
Check your 12V and 240V systems. Test all lights — brake, indicator, clearance and interior. Check that your battery is holding charge and top up with distilled water if needed. Test your breakaway system and ensure the smoke alarm is working.
4. Plumbing & Gas Check
Run water through the entire system and check for leaks at every join. Sanitise your water tank before use. Have your gas system inspected by a licensed gas fitter — this is a legal requirement in NSW and essential for your safety.
5. Brakes & Bearings
After sitting idle, brake components can seize or corrode. Have your brakes inspected and adjusted. Wheel bearings should be checked and repacked with grease at regular intervals — especially before a long trip.
